Within 3-5 years, Ukraine will transfer to competitive natural gas transit rates, the country`s Fuel and Energy Minister Yury Boyko told an international oil and gas industry forum in Kiev, according to RBC . He added that Ukraine had already reached an understanding with its international partners about such a transition, given that it would be a gradual process and would not be harmful to the economy.

Over the first nine months of 2007, some 80.01bn cubic meters of natural gas was pumped to other destinations via Ukraine. The country`s gas pipeline system carries 80 percent of Russia`s natural gas exports to Europe, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, France, Greece, Austria, and Turkey.
