"Every doctor is actually also at the forefront, fighting for our health and life," the president said.

"Ukrainian doctors are like Ukrainian soldiers defending the country in the east. And the dead doctors' families will receive respective compensations soon. Although, of course, no money could bring their loved ones back," he added.

The president called on Ukrainians to think about how hard doctors work and to abide by the quarantine rules – to wear face masks, keep social distancing in public transport, supermarkets, and public places.

"Be careful to stay healthy. It will be the best gift for our doctors. Let's present them such gifts. Today and every day," he said.

Zelensky congratulated healthcare workers on Medical Worker Day and promised them a pay rise.
