Ukrainian Health Minister Maksym Stepanov says the number of pneumonia cases in Ukraine has almost doubled compared to May 2020.
The Health Ministry in April ordered that all patients with pneumonia should undergo COVID-19 testing. At that moment, about 5,000 pneumonia cases were registered.
After tough quarantine-related measures were introduced, the incidence of pneumonia cases began to decline, he said.
"As of May 11, the weekly rate was 2,143 pneumonia cases. As of today, we register over 4,000 pneumonia cases on a weekly basis. Most of them are complications from COVID-19," he said.
As Ukraine's State Statistics Service reported, 100,738 people died in Ukraine in the first two months of 2020. Influenza and pneumonia were confirmed causes in 1,326 cases.
Since the start of the COVID-19 epidemic in Ukraine, the death toll was 1,147 people.
