Great Britain were beaten 4-2 by Ukraine in their first game of the World Championships in Poland, BBC reported.

Greg Chambers set up David Clarke to give GB the lead before Oleg Shafarenko levelled the score.

Ukraine then capitalised on a breakaway with Vitali Lytvynenko adding the finishing touch, only for GB to equalise with a Danny Meyers shot.

But late on Sergi Varlamov fired Ukraine ahead and Lytvynenko bagged his second to settle the match.

"We have a wounded dressing room," said GB coach Paul Thompson. "They are just as low as you can get. They know they came so close to a major upset and played just a terrific game.

"Ukraine are a team used to playing at the Pool A level and they were no better than we were for the vast majority of the game, they just punished us at the key times."

GB next play Italy in World Championship Division One Group B on Monday.
