England won 1-0 to qualify as Group D winners, co-hosts Ukraine bowed out, while France marched forward as runners-up despite a 2-0 loss to Sweden at the Euro 2012 tournament on Tuesday, according to Xinhua.

For the last eight encounters, England will play Italy in Kyiv on June 24 and France will face holders Spain in Donetsk on June 23.

Wayne Rooney who appeared at Euro 2012 for the first time after serving a two-game suspension, scored the winner in the 48th minute from Steven Gerrard`s wicked low cross which Andriy Pyatov couldn`t deal with and Rooney was on hand to head into an open goal.

Ukraine who needed a win to advance, had their otherwise equaliser hooked out from inside the goal line by John Terry shortly after Rooney`s goal as referee Viktor Kassai of Hungary remained silent without any gesture.

"I don`t feel ashamed of my team and I also don`t want to put a finger at referee. It`s painful, and referee made the mistakes," said Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin.

Throughout the match, Ukraine seemed to be the upperhands with more ball possession and shots attempts, but with neither luck nor the help of lucky hands.

Knowing anything other than victory meant the end of their campaign, Ukraine made a point of laying down the early tempo. Denys Garmash had the first shot for Ukraine as his vicious effort whistled over.

However, Rooney`s goal three minutes after the break, was enough to kill them even after Andriy Shevchenko who failed to start due to a knee injury, came onto the field as a substitute in the 70th minute.
