Victor Yushchenko has congratulated the national football team on reaching the World Cup quarter-finals after beating Switzerland, according to the President’s press-office.
On June 26, Ukraine won 3:0 on penalties in Cologne.
The President said the Ukrainian footballers had showed the world they could fight and masterfully defend their goal. He thanked the players and coaches for a real spectacle they presented to their fans. Mr. Yushchenko added that their victories were a wonderful present to Ukrainians before the fifteenth anniversary of the country’s independence.
The Head of State then opined that the successful matches of our team helped unite the country and foster patriotic feelings, “for fans wrapped in yellow-and-blue national flags can be seen in every Ukrainian city and town when our team play.”
The President said he had kept his fingers crossed during yesterday’s game. He promised to support the team in their match with Italy on June 30.
