Fighting rages near Debaltseve and Stanitsa Luhanska overnight

Fierce fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed militants raged overnight near the key Ukrainian position of Debatlseve, government Anti-Terrorist Operation press officer Leonid Matyukhin said at a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday.

"After 1800, the terrorists continued the bombardment of positions of our military and peaceful settlements with various types of weapons," Matyukhin said.

According to Matyukhin, the militants launched mortar and artillery attacks on Novotoshkivske, Stary Aidar, Sokolnyky, Makarove, Olkhove, and attacked the town of Stanitsa Luhanska three times. The militants also attacked the town of Shastya with Grad multiple rocket launcher systems and mortars.

In addition, following an attack by a tank, at 0035, there were armed clashes in the village of Stanitsa Luhanska. Later the militants retreated when Ukrainian forces counterattacked.

"Around Debaltseve, the militants attacked with mortars and artillery twice at Sanzharovka and Debaltseve. Using Grad rockets, the militants fired at Maloorlovka. At 2305 there was a clash in the area of Debaltseve," Matyukhin said.

Near Donetsk, mortars and artillery were fired at Krasnogorovka and three times at Novotroitske.

The militants have been deliberately firing on civilian areas, Matyukhin said. Over the last day, the militants fired Grad rockets at Shastya, and mortars and artillery at Novotroitske, Mykolaivka, Granitne, Shastya and Chermalyk.
