Shelling in Donbas: Situation deteriorating near Mariupol, says Ukrainian military
Russian-backed militants on Wednesday evening intensified their shelling of Ukrainian positions significantly after a relative lull along the demarcation line in eastern Ukraine, the press center of the Anti-Terrorist Operation said on its Facebook page on Thursday.
From Wednesday evening to midnight, the militants attacked Ukrainian army positions more than 30 times, the press center said.
"The most difficult situation is near Mariupol. The militants fired powerful 152mm howitzers on the positions of the Ukrainian armed forces near the villages of Shyrokyne and Talakivka,” the press center said.
“They also fired 122mm caliber artillery systems on the village of Berdianske. In addition, the militants fired small arms, grenade launchers and a portable version of a Grad rocket launcher on the village of Shyrokyne," the headquarters said.
In the area of Donetsk, the militants fired 120mm mortars on the villages of Pisky and Opytne. They also fired heavy mortars on the villages of Leninske and Kirove near Artemivsk, as well as the town of Shastya and the village of Stanytsia Luhanska in Luhansk region, the Ukrainian military said.
"In general, the militants used heavy weapons 43 times in the last day. From midnight until this time, the mercenaries have already attacked the positions of the Ukrainian troops six times. They fired 120mm mortar shells again on the village of Shyrokyne.
“In addition, [the militants] fired small arms and rocket-propelled grenades on the town of Krasnohorivka and the village of Berdianske," the press center said.
