Russian proxies attack Ukrainian troops 81 times overnight
The combined Russian-separatist forces attacked Ukrainian army positions in eastern Ukraine 81 times overnight, using banned artillery systems five times, mortars 25 times, small arms and rocket-propelled grenade launchers 56 times, and tanks five times, the press center of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) wrote on its Facebook page on Wednesday.
"From 18:00 Kyiv time on August 4 to midnight, the number of attacks on the positions of ATO forces has decreased slightly. At the same time, the greatest enemy activity is observed near the city of Donetsk," the report says.
At 20:30 Kyiv time and 21:15 Kyiv time, sabotage and reconnaissance groups of the enemy tried to break through the defense of ATO forces near the village of Verkhniotoretske. During the clashes, which lasted nearly half an hour, the Kremlin-backed mercenaries had to retreat.
"At 20:40, 21:25 and 23:35 Kyiv time, the Russian occupiers fired tank shells on our fortified position in the village of Opytne. In addition, at about 21:00 Kyiv time, they fired 120mm mortars on the village of Vodiane," the report reads.
At about 21:00 Kyiv time, Russian proxies fired 122mm and 152mm artillery on residential areas of the town of Avdiyivka from Donetsk.
"The militants also intensified their aerial reconnaissance in Luhansk region. From 19:00 Kyiv time to midnight, the Ukrainian army recorded eight reconnaissance overflights by enemy drones," the ATO headquarters said.
