Donbas seeing escalation: 61 attacks on ATO forces recorded in last day
The combined Russian-separatist forces attacked Ukrainian army positions in eastern Ukraine 61 times in the past 24 hours, the press center of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) wrote on Facebook early Monday.
It is noted that the main hot spots were areas around the militant-held city of Donetsk and the neighborhood of the temporarily occupied town of Horlivka.
"The terrorists have fired small arms and rocket-propelled grenades on our fortified positions in the villages of Pisky and Opytne. They have also opened fire on the Ukrainian fortified positions near the town of Maryinka 16 times. In addition to small arms, the enemy used 82mm and 120mm mortars there," the report says.
The occupiers also fired mortars on the Ukrainian positions in the villages of Troyitske and Mayorsk, as well as the town of Krasnohorivka.
"The Russian-backed mercenaries fired heavy machine guns and small arms on the Ukrainian fortified positions near the villages of Zaitseve, Novhorodske, Myronivske and Starohnativka," the press center said.
In some cases, the Ukrainian military were forced to fire back.
