"Some missiles hit local residents' houses, which caught fire. Immediately after the attacks on our positions, militants turned their weapons and fired in the direction of Donetsk," the ATO HQ wrote on Facebook on Sunday morning, adding the provocation was conducted to blame the ATO forces.
Avdiyivka was attacked twice with the use of 122mm artillery systems.
One civilian woman, born in 1956, received shrapnel wounds, her house at 225 Kirova Street was destroyed and burnt out.
Another missile hit a house at 9 Levanevskoho Street. The windows, roof and facade of the house were damaged, according to the National Police division in Donetsk region. Investigators are working on the site now.
"Information about this crime was included in the Ukrainian national register of pre-trial investigations under Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (a terrorist attack)," the police said.
Ruins in Avdiyivka after an overnight attack by Russian proxies
Spokesman for the Ukrainian Presidential Administration for ATO issues Oleksandr Motuzianyk announced an update later on Sunday on the casualties of the Avdiyivka attack, saying that in addition to the civilian, one Ukrainian soldier was killed and another was wounded.
"In the past 24 hours, one Ukrainian soldier was killed (KIA) and another was wounded (WIA) as a result of hostilities in Donbas. This happened during the artillery attack on Avdiyivka," he said.

Ukrainian troops deployed not far from the town of Krasnohorivka were under sniper fire at night. The sniper was firing from the outskirts of Donetsk. Militants also used small arms and large-caliber guns to shell the villages of Zaitseve and Luhanske located at along the Svitlodarska Duha – a stretch between the militant-controlled town of Horlivka and the town of Svitlodarsk in Donetsk region.
What is more, Russian proxies continue shelling Ukrainian forces in the Mariupol sector. Ukrainian troops located near the village of Shyrokyne, close to the Ukrainian controlled strategic port city of Mariupol, were attacked by militants with the use of large-caliber guns, grenade launchers, and 120mm mortars.
Luhansk region also saw escalation. Ukrainian strongholds near the villages of Stanytsia Luhanska, Novozvanivka and Triokhizbenka were under militant fire. The enemy used grenade launchers of different systems, small arms, and an anti-aircraft system.
Three enemy reconnaissance drones were spotted in the past day.
Since the beginning of Sunday, there have been at least six militant attacks on ATO forces almost in all the sectors.
