Islamists attack in Egypt, leaving 26 people dead and dozens injured

Islamist militants have attacked checkpoints, police offices and army bases using mortars, firearms and at least one car bomb in several cities in Egypt, with dozens of people being injured, the BBC has reported.

Militants affiliated with the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attacks, calling on the Egyptian people to protest against President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

In an audio message posted on YouTube early on January 29, the militants of Islamic State threatened to kill a Jordanian air force pilot if an Iraqi militant was not released by sunset on January 29.
