U.S. President George Bush and Ukraine Party of Regions leader, ex-Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, have discussed Ukraine`s European and Euro-Atlantic integration at a meeting in Kyiv on Tuesday.
"The Party of Regions supports Ukraine`s aspirations toward European integration," Yanukovych`s press service quoted him as saying at the meeting.
Speaking about Ukraine`s possible joining NATO, V.Yanukovych informed G.Bush that Ukrainians are split on the issue and that public opinion polls indicate that a majority of them are against joining the Alliance.
"Ukraine`s accession to NATO is possible only after Ukraine holds a referendum on this issue," Yanukovych said. "It was important for us, the opposition, to express our point of view and be heard. We succeeded in this," he said.
