The Typhoon aircraft, from 6th (Fighter) Squadron, RAF Lossiemouth were launched after multiple groups of aircraft were detected by NATO air defenses in international airspace near to the Baltic States. Once airborne, the RAF jets identified the aircraft as four FULLBACKS Sukhoi Su-34 fighters, four FOXHOUNDS Mikoyan MiG-31 fighters and two Antonov An26 'CURL' transport aircraft, which appeared to be carrying out a variety of routine training. The Russian aircraft were monitored by the RAF Typhoons and escorted on their way, the report reads.

As UNIAN reported earlier, NATO forces intercepted Russian planes over Europe 250 times in 2015. NATO officials said that it was the highest number for the same period since the end of the Cold War.

Last week, 22 Russian aircraft were intercepted over the Baltic Sea.
