The visit of Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel to Ukraine is scheduled for July 21.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, deputy President’s Chief of Staff Oleksandr Chaly disclosed this at a press conference on Tuesday.

The visit of the German Chancellor is very important for Ukraine, he stressed.

O.Chaly noted that, for Ukraine, the position of Germany about Ukraine’s joining NATO MAP, seems very cautious.

O. Chaly noted that President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko will try to persuade A. Merkel to ease her position, and assist Ukraine’s joining the Membership Action Plan.

Asked by journalists whether Victor Yushchenko is ready to “charm Merkel”, O.Chaly noted that the President of Ukraine is devoted to his priorities and aims in foreign policy, and “if it is necessary to charm anybody, he will try to do that”.

As UNIAN reported earlier, at a summit in Bucharest in April, NATO members decided to postpone offering Ukraine, along with Georgia, membership of MAP, but promised to review the decision in December. The ex-Soviet republics had received strong U.S. backing for their bids.
