German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday there was no need to change the position on Georgian and Ukrainian membership of NATO, as agreed by the defence alliance at a summit in April, according to Reuters.

"Georgia and Ukraine could be members of NATO, we have left the timing open and we have said they could be made members if they want this and that position remains," Merkel said at a joint news conference with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
