NATO jets scramble to intercept Russian warplane over Baltics
NATO fighter jets that patrol the skies over the Baltics escorted the Russian military aircraft Il-20, as reported by the National Armed Forces of Latvia on Twitter.
"On September 17, the air patrol jets scrambled to intercept an Il-20 aircraft belonging to the Russian Air Force over the Baltic Sea not far from the border of Latvia," the statement reads.
Earlier, Ukraine's Ambassador to Latvia Yevgeny Perebiynis said that after what had happened in Crimea and Donbas, a scenario of a possible Russian aggression against the Baltic States today was not totally implausible. And that is why Latvia pays great attention to security issues and the strengthening of its army.
