Ex-Soviet president Gorbachev becomes great-grandfather

The granddaughter of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has given birth to a girl, a spokesperson for the Gorbachev Foundation said on Wednesday.

28-year-old Ksenya is the daughter of Irina Virganskaya, the only child of Gorbachev, 77, and his late wife, Raisa.

Irina also has a younger daughter named Anastasiya.

Gorbachev`s great-granddaughter was born in a German clinic on Wednesday morning. The child weighs 3.9 kg (8.6 lbs). She has been named Alexandra.

A spokesperson for the Gorbachev Foundation said the child was "feeling well," adding however that the former Soviet leader had not yet seen Alexandra as he was currently in Moscow.

Ksenya is married to Dmitry Pyrchenkov, a concert promoter for Russian pop stars.
