Landslides and floods caused by heavy rain have killed at least 59 people in southern Brazil and forced more than 43,000 from their homes, officials said Monday, according to New York Times. The state of Santa Catarina said floods and mudslides had affected 1.5 million people there, leaving about 150,000 people without electricity and five towns completely cut off by flood waters. The death toll was likely to rise, state officials said.
