Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Friday said he had asked the European Union to keep its observers monitoring its gas conflict with Ukraine on the ground until the end of the first quarter, AFP reported.

"We ask the European Union to keep the observers until the end of the first quarter 2009," Putin said after talks with EU Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso.

He also complained that Ukraine had not allowed Russian observers to the "central control rooms or the underground gas storage tanks".

The monitors had been sent to monitor the flow of gas after Russia`s gas conflict with Ukraine which caused several European countries to be deprived of gas for two weeks.
