Ukraine will never turn off gas tap to Hungary - Yushchenko
Or the rest of the European market
Ukraine will never block Russian supplies of gas to Hungary or the rest of the European market, Viktor Yushchenko, Ukraine’s president, said after meeting with his Hungarian counterpart in Budapest on Tuesday, Budapest Business Journal reported.
Ukraine is clear about how important it is to transport Russian gas on to European markets, and does so without conditions attached, Yushchenko said.
Events on the gas market underscore the importance of creating a unified energy system in Europe, Yushchenko said, adding that Ukraine would also participate in such a system.
In spite of the global crisis, bilateral trade between Hungary and Ukraine is growing, but a sensitive point in economic relations remains gas supply, President László Sólyom said.
After the hour-and-a-half long meeting in the Sándor Palace, agriculture and foreign affairs cooperation agreements were signed.
Yushchenko arrived in Budapest on Tuesday for a two-day official visit. He will meet with Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai and House Speaker Katalin Szili on Wednesday.
