Wayne Rooney has apologised to supporters for his outburst following England`s disappointing 0-0 draw with Algeria, according to Goal.com.

In a Football Association statement the Manchester United player said he was sorry for criticising fans who booed the Three Lions` lacklustre performance on Friday night.

As he left the pitch the striker turned to a TV camera that was tracking his movements and rounded on his tormentors, declaring: "Nice to see your own fans booing you. Loyal supporters."

After reflecting on his conduct overnight, Rooney admitted he had gone over the top.

"Last night, on reflection I said things in the heat of the moment that came out of frustration of both our performance and the result," Rooney said in the statement.

"For my part I apologise for any offence caused by my actions at the end of the game.

"I am as passionate about the England team as anyone.

"The most important thing now is to regroup be positive and work towards winning the game on Wednesday. To do this the players will need the support of the fans more than ever."
