President Victor Yushchenko on Thursday met with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Göran Lennmarker, according to the President`s press-office.

Yushchenko said he was glad the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly was holding its 16th session in Kyiv, describing it as a sign of international recognition of Ukraine’s democratic changes.

Speaking about the country’s political situation, the president said: “We are coming out of this difficult crisis in a democratic manner.” He added that there were “no serious hurdles for holding early parliamentary elections on September 30.”

 

Yushchenko called on Lennmarker to ensure that the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly recognizes Ukraine’s Great Famine of 1932-1933 as genocide. He said it would be an “important step” to fight ethnic intolerance and discrimination in the OSCE region.
