At least 16 teenagers were killed and 32 injured after a bus plunged 120 meters into a ravine in the northwest of Bolivia, local Nuevo Herald daily reported on Friday, according to RIA Novosti.

The bus carrying schoolchildren between 16 and 18 years of age was heading for an athletic event. According to one of the survivors, the bus driver lost control when he swerved to avoid a collision with an oncoming vehicle.

Rescuers are still working to clear debris at the scene and say the death toll may rise. Police are establishing the cause of the tragedy.
