The U.S. Embassy and the Ministry of Interior of Ukraine today signed an agreement under which the United States Government will provide Ukraine nearly $900,000 in technical assistance for law enforcement and strengthening the rule of law, according to the U.S. Embassy to Ukraine.

This raises the total U.S. investment in Ukrainian law enforcement development to $2.5 million for 2007.

The projects included in this agreement will assist Ukraine in efforts to harmonize the criminal justice system, including law enforcement agencies, with European norms and standards. This agreement also includes projects to strengthen Ukraine’s capabilities to investigate and prosecute corruption as well as protect intellectual property rights.

This agreement is part of a multi-year, multi-million dollar effort to work with the Government of Ukraine to strengthen the law enforcement sector as a key democratic institution in line with Ukraine’s Council of Europe obligations and to expand law enforcement cooperation between our two countries.
