Rice lends support to Ukraine NATO bid
While Russia warns about "serious" complication of relations
Within the framework of his visit to Davos, Switzerland President Victor Yushchenko met with the United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, according to the President`s press-office.
Participants of the meeting discussed Ukrainian-American bilateral relations, Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the country, Ukraine’s joining the WTO, internal political processes in our state, preparation of President’s George Bush visit to Ukraine.
President expressed gratitude to the United States for showing active support to Ukraine in question of joining the WTO.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice stressed US support Wednesday for Ukraine`s accession to NATO during talks with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko. "The secretary reiterated the US view that NATO should leave the door open to those European democratic states who meet membership requirements," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters, according to AP. Russia has warned that Ukraine`s NATO ambitions would "seriously" complicate relations between the two countries.
C. Rice also positively opined on the political processes in Ukraine and expressed hopes that democratic transformation within our country continues. She also affirmed that American side shall participate in Kyiv Energy Summit on the high level in May 2008.
Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ohryzko also took part in the meeting.
