Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has withdrawn bill No. 8297 on amendments to the Law of Ukraine on Citizenship of Ukraine, which stipulates the stripping of Ukrainian citizenship for voting in Russian-occupied Crimea.

"The president of Ukraine has withdrawn his controversial bill on citizenship, which posed a threat of revocation of Ukrainian citizenship to residents of the occupied Crimea," Alyona Lunova, an activist from the Human Rights Information Center, wrote on Facebook on May 16.

The relevant information was also posted on the website of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, on May 16.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Poroshenko tabled bill No. 8297 on amendments to the Law of Ukraine on Citizenship of Ukraine in parliament on April 20. The document proposed stripping of Ukrainian citizenship for participation in "elections" in Russian-occupied Crimea. It was submitted as a priority one.
