“These days the world is gravely concerned about increasing turmoil of violence around the globe and reasonably expects more engagement of the United Nations in restoring peace and security. I believe the UN must take this opportunity and tackle current security challenges through efficient reform of its peacekeeping capabilities,” said Poroshenko.

According to the Ukrainian President, recent initiatives of the UN Secretary-General, in particular on comprehensive reviews of the UN peacekeeping and peace-building architecture, as well as the report of the High-Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations, could provide a solid guidance for such a reform.

As UNIAN reported earlier, ahead of the U.S. visit, Petro Poroshenko said that all international contacts in the framework of the General Assembly will be dedicated to providing for a powerful Transatlantic unity and solidarity with Ukraine.

Poroshenko stressed that Ukraine would take decisive steps to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, proposing changes aimed at restoring the historical mission of the UN Security Council as a mechanism to protect global security.
