Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has explained why a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin is needed.

"There are some things you can understand only when you are one on one. There are some answers to what you can and [what you] want, and it is better to hear them when you are one on one to draw crystal clear conclusions and proceed with another plan, Plan B," Zelensky said at a press conference in Kyiv on May 20 on the first year of his presidency, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

Zelensky says "society has a mixed assessment of direct talks between President Zelensky and President Putin."

"I'm sure we should do this without dropping Minsk [talks], but to do simultaneously, as a separate track," he added.
