The United States Embassy in Ukraine says the Ukrainian film director Oleh Sentsov, who has been illegally sentenced in Russia, should be able to accept in person the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize awarded to him this year.
"The decision to award the 2018 #SakharovPrize for Freedom of Thought to Oleh Sentsov is further confirmation that he is a prisoner of conscience. He has displayed courage, dignity, and determination in defending Ukrainian prisoners unjustly jailed by Russia," the Embassy wrote in a tweet.
"Oleh should be able to accept his well-deserved prize in person: Russia should immediately release him and all other political prisoners," the diplomats wrote.
The diplomats concluded their tweet with a #FreeSentsov hashtag.
As UNIAN reported earlier, today, October 25, the European Parliament announced that this year's winner of the Sakharov Prize "For Freedom of Thought" was Oleh Sentsov.
