Savchenko's lawyer to represent Ukrainian lawyers in Moscow

Nadia Savchenko's lawyer Ilya Novikov has chaired the office of the Ukrainian National Bar Association (the NAAU) in Russia. The Ukrainian Lawyers Council approved his candidacy, according to Ukraine Today.

The NAAU office in Russia can help look for lawyers to defend Ukrainian citizens in Russia, as well as advise the Russian business, which operates in Ukraine and needs to have a better understanding of the Ukrainian legislation, Ukraine Today reports.

The Committee recommended the candidacy of Novikov – one of the lawyers of Nadiya Savchenko and other Ukrainians in Russia – as a patriotic, friendly to Ukraine partner, committed to developing cooperation with Russian lawyers.

Russian prosecutors accused her of killing two Russian journalists in Luhansk region and illegally crossing the Ukrainian-Russian border. In spite of her denying the charges, Savchenko was convicted and sentenced to 22 years in prison on March 22. Human rights organizations, the OSCE, some UN Security Council members and the European Parliament have all called for her release.

On late April 18, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to discuss the possible exchange of Savchenko for the convicted Russian servicemen.
