"According to statistics, nine journalists were killed while performing their duties. Many volunteered for the army: five journalists were killed as servicemen on the frontline," he said during awarding war correspondents.

According to Parubiy, "many have undergone the horror and hell of captivity," sometimes the journalists' heroism "bordered on recklessness, when the journalists penetrated into the enemy rear in order to film the report about the current events."

As UNIAN reported earlier, NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov on Monday compared the journalists with soldiers while greeting them on a Journalist Day. 

"Your weapon is your word," he said.
