The head of the Southern Federal District is former Russian Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov, who has been in office since 2008.

Earlier, it was reported that Putin had dismissed the envoy to the "Crimean Federal District" Oleg Belaventsev. He has moved on to a similar post in the North Caucasian Federal District.

Russia created the "Crimean Federal District" after it annexed Crimea in March 2014.
