Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz has called on the EU to halt the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project.

The pipeline is destroying the effect of sanctions imposed on Russia, the minister told Germany's Handelsblatt

"Nord Stream 2 kills Ukraine," said Czaputowicz. "If the Russian gas transit through Ukraine is over, the country will lose not only substantial revenues, but above all the guarantee of protection against further acts of Russian aggression."

The European Commission also seeks to prevent Russian energy giant Gazprom to become a sole gas supplier to the EU, according to the top diplomat.

The minister expressed regret that the EU member states could not agree on a common position on the construction of the gas pipeline.

"Poland, the U.S., and the European Commission represent a pro-European position here, while Germany – an anti-European position," said Czaputowicz.

He accused Germany and Austria of "deception maneuvers" around the project.
