European gas for Ukraine now costs less than $300

The price of gas that Ukraine buys from European suppliers is less than $300 per thousand cubic meters, Minister of Energy of Ukraine Volodymyr Demchyshyn told journalists on Tuesday.

"The price of European gas for Ukraine is less than $300 now. I know the exact number, but it's a commercial secret. But I can say that it is less than $300," he said.

As reported earlier, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said that the price of gas imported from Europe to Ukraine in summer time, from April to October, would be about $250-300 per thousand cubic meters.

At the moment, the price of Russian gas imported to Ukraine is $329 per thousand cubic meters.

Ukraine, with the help of the EU, renegotiated the price of its gas supplies from Russia’s Gazprom, Ukraine’s main gas supplier, in October last year. However, the deal struck then runs out at the end of the first quarter of this year, and Moscow has indicated the price it charges Kyiv for gas may well rise.
