"Today we sanctioned Russian-owned oil firm Rosneft Trading S.A., cutting off Maduro's main lifeline to evade our sanctions on the Venezuelan oil sector. Those who prop up the corrupt regime and enable its repression of the Venezuelan people will be held accountable," U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wrote on Twitter on February 18, 2020.

It is reported Rosneft stock prices fell after the announcement of U.S. sanctions.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the United States announced its intention to impose sanctions directly against Rosneft in early February 2020. The U.S. State Department accused Rosneft of buying oil from Venezuela in spite of U.S. sanctions.
