Following criticism on the part of the Ukrainian Embassy in the United Kingdom over the publication of a World Cup 2018 map of stadiums with Crimea designated as part of Russia, The Times issued a formal apology.

"A map in Saturday's World Cup supplement wrongly showed Crimea as part of Russia. The overwhelming majority of nations (including the UK) refuse to recognize Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine and have condemned it as contrary to international law," The Times wrote in a statement June 11.

"We apologise for the mistake," the publication wrote.

In turn, the Ukrainian diplomats praised the newspaper's response.

".@thetimes Everyone can make a mistake. What is crucial - to acknowledge them and correct timely. We do appreciate! #CrimeaIsUkraine," the Ukrainian Embassy in the UK tweeted.
