Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko states that the European Union, jointly with Ukraine, will counter Russia's "creeping annexation" of the Sea of Azov.

"I welcome the approval of an important resolution of the European Parliament on the situation in the Sea of Azov. The Russian aggressor must understand that all its actions breaking the international law and bilateral agreements will continue to receive a decisive and adequate response from the democratic community," President Petro Poroshenko noted on his Facebook page.

The head of state stressed: "The European Union, together with Ukraine, will counter the 'creeping annexation' of the Sea of Azov by Russia and violation of the freedom of navigation."

The president noted that he highly appreciates the European Parliament's support for the initiative to assist Ukrainian ports and implement projects of socio-economic assistance for the Ukrainian Pryazovya area.

"I am grateful to the European Parliament for calling for additional targeted sanctions for the Kremlin's aggressive actions in the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait. I hope for the practical implementation of these initiatives by the institutions and the EU member states," Petro Poroshenko said.

The head of state also added that he would coordinate further joint actions with a view to protect the national interests of Ukraine in the course of the upcoming meetings with European leaders.
