Head of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Tetiana Slipachuk has said the parliamentary election campaign in Ukraine will start on May 24.

"The CEC's official position is that today, on May 23, after the publication of the decree on the early termination of the powers of the Verkhovna Rada and the appointment of early parliamentary elections, the election process of early parliamentary elections starts from the day following publication, i.e. from May 24, 2019, without the CEC making a separate decision on its launch," she said at a briefing on May 23.

Slipachuk said the electoral process is inevitable and the CEC is ready and able to perform functions for the conduct of early parliamentary elections.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine's new President Volodymyr Zelensky on May 21 signed a decree disbanding the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament.

On May 23, the decree on the early termination of the powers of the Verkhovna Rada and the appointment of early elections on July 21, 2019 was published in the government's official newspaper Uriadovy Kurier.
