The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted a law “On Introducing Amendments into the Law of Ukraine “On Status of Local Councils Deputies”.
According to an UNIAN correspondent, 296 lawmakers out of 382, registered in the chamber, voted for this law.
The lawmakers of the factions “Regions of Ukraine”, SDPU(U), and “Vidrodzhennia” mostly abstained from voting.
The law cancels provision 7, article 30, from the Law of Ukraine “On Status of Local Councils Deputies”, which allowed bringing a criminal case against local councils deputies only upon the decision of the corresponding council.
At the same time, article 31 of the law establishes a special procedure of instituting criminal proceedings against a local council deputy. In particular, a criminal case against him may be brought only by the Prosecutor General, deputy Prosecutor General, Crimean Prosecutor, Oblast prosecutors, and prosecutors of the cities of Kyiv and Sevastopol.
As UNIAN reported earlier, on 8 September 2005, the parliament adopted Law of Ukraine “On Introducing Amendments into the Law of Ukraine “On Status of Local Councils Deputies”, having established the immunity for local councils deputies.
