Victor Yushchenko has told reporters in Kharkiv he will not oppose the government despite today’s dismissals of two ministers representing the Our Ukraine Bloc, according to the President`s press-office.

“The President will not be in opposition to the government, for it was appointed by parliament and is thereby legitimate. Our relations with the government will be based on constitutional norms and positions,” he said.

He said, however, the dismissals of Culture Minister Ihor Likhovy and Justice Minister Roman Zvarych would impede the political dialogue between Ukraine’s major parties.

“The dismissals of the ministers representing the Our Ukraine Bloc add no compromises or new ground to negotiations. I think this decision complicates the dialogue between the parties no matter what new people will come,” he said.

Mr. Yushchenko opined that “the political forces will thus lose their team spirit,” reiterating that political unity was of “paramount importance.”
