"Ukraine does not recognize the unilateral proclamation of the independence of Catalonia," the statement says.

"We support the actions of the Spanish Government aimed at resolving the crisis in the framework of the Constitution in force, adherence to the law and respect for the rights of all citizens," the ministry said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on Friday afternoon, Catalan MPs voted for independence by a margin of 70 votes to 10. Soon after the vote at the regional parliament, the Senate – Spain's upper house – made the unprecedented step of approving measures allowing the Spanish government to impose direct rule over Catalonia.
