President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko will welcome formation of a new coalition if it improves the efficiency of the Verkhovna Rada’s work.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, President’s permanent representative to parliament Ihor Popov claimed this to a session of the Conciliatory Council of parliamentary factions and committees on Monday.

“If a new coalition is formed to increase the efficiency of legislative work of the Verkhovna Rada, of course, the President and the society will welcome this step”, I.Popov stressed.

He stressed that it is only up to parliament to form a coalition. At the same time, he noted, if a coalition has intent to introduce amendments into the Constitution, this process must be carried out openly.

I.Popov also recalled that two months ago the President of Ukraine had submitted to the Verkhovna Rada his own draft amendments into the Constitution, and asked the parliament to speed up its consideration.

Commenting on the statement of I.Popov, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn noted that, probably, the President is not satisfied with a working parliament.

“He is not satisfied with one coalition, with another, and everything that takes place in the Verkhovna Rada does not satisfy the President”, the Speaker noted.
