Victor Yushchenko told reporters on Wednesday charges against former interior minister Yuriy Lutsenko were “obviously politically motivated”, according to the President`s press-office.

The President said these accusations were apparently aimed at restricting Lutsenko’s travels in Ukraine and "isolating" his political activity. Thus he asked law enforcement agencies not to forget about their social mission.

“Do not make mistakes you made two years ago,” he said, expressing confidence the problem would soon be resolved in court.

Mr. Yushchenko said he trusted Yuriy Lutsenko as professional. He said the minister had sought to renew the nation’s trust in his discredited ministry.

He complained that the Interior Ministry under its new leadership did lots of “thoughtless and irresponsible” things and was "immensely politicized." He said he had recently spoken with Interior Minister Vasyl Tsushko, particularly to demand that he never again hold police parades at Kyiv’s Independence Square.
