Election campaign starts in Ukraine on August 2
The President officially set the election date
President Victor Yushchenko has changed his decree no. 497 calling for an early parliamentary election on September 30, his deputy chief of staff and representative to the Central Election Commission and the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, Maryna Stavniychuk, said at a press briefing on Wednesday, according to the President`s press-office. She added that the decree had been published in The Official Gazette of the President of Ukraine.
Stavniychuk said Ukraine’s election campaign starts on August 2.
“The president is the only official entitled to set a date for early parliamentary elections,” she said, adding that early elections should be held within sixty days after a dissolution decree is officially published. “There is no other term in the constitution for holding early elections."
