The US State Department is calling on the Ukrainian government to free Yulia Tymoshenko and other political prisoners, according to the Official web site of Yulia Tymoshenko.
"We urge the Government of Ukraine to free Mrs. Tymoshenko and the other former government officials currently in detention. We believe that they should have an unrestricted ability to participate fully in political life, including next year’s parliamentary elections," Deputy Spokesperson Mark C. Toner said at the daily press briefing on December 27.
Toner stressed that the United States was disappointed the appellate court upheld the Pechersk court’s verdict from October 11, 2011. "The United States was disappointed that the Kyiv Court of Appeals upheld the conviction of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko on December 23rd and did not address concerns about democracy and rule of law raised in the initial trial and sentencing," he said.
