Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy have sent a letter to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych requesting permission for their diplomats in Kyiv to visit unlawfully imprisoned former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, according to Official web site of Yulia Tymoshenko.
"We asked our ambassadors in Kyiv to request permission to visit Mrs. Tymoshenko and hope that these visits may soon take place," Mario Monti and Mariano Rajoy wrote in their letter.
The Italian and Spanish premiers took the opportunity of their visit to Ukraine to attend the final of the European football championship to express their governments’ continued support for Ukraine’s European aspirations. "At the same time, we are expressing our hope of a positive outcome in the court cases of former Prime Minister Tymoshenko and other members of the previous government, as required by the international community and the strengthening of the rule of law and democratic values that should unite the peoples of Europe," stressed the European leaders.
The letter was dated and delivered on July 1.
