A solution to the politically motivated imprisonment of former Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko and former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko is the main condition for the signing of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, Elmar Brok, Chair of the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament, has said, according to an Official web site of Yulia Tymoshenko.

"The issue of Yulia Tymoshenko and Yuriy Lutsenko must be addressed first," Elmar Brok said. "If these matters are resolved, it will be much easier to fight for Ukraine’s European perspective. I think that if all this is done, the signing of the agreement may take place."

The MEP also stressed that Germany’s proposal to treat Yulia Tymoshenko at Berlin’s Charité hospital remains in effect. "The Yulia Tymoshenko case is discussed in the EU at a very high level, it’s on our agenda. And until these matters are resolved, they will remain on the agenda. It is a condition for the signing of the association agreement," he said.

"I think this is understood in Ukrainian political circles and they will act appropriately," he added.

The MEP also said that during his visit to Kyiv he met with the new leadership of the Verkhovna Rada and the Cabinet of Ministers. "I met with the prime minister and the new speaker of parliament. My meeting with Renat Kuzmin [the first deputy prosecutor general] was cancelled at the last minute. I think he’s very busy and is preparing for his meeting with President Obama," Elmar Brok suggested.
