Two teenagers were injured in southern Ukraine when their homemade fireworks exploded unexpectedly, authorities said Friday, according to Xinhua.

The blast occurred at about 9.45 p.m. local time Thursday (1945 GMT) in Kerch city of Ukraine's autonomous republic of Crimea, when a 13-year-old boy and another 14-year-old were making fireworks to entertain their family during the New Year holidays, the Emergencies Ministry said.

The two teenagers sustained burns in the face.

The accident raised concerns among local fire officials about careless use of fireworks. Police urged people to follow the safety instructions while using fireworks during the upcoming holidays.
