The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Ukraine has announced the launch of the process of sanction application on Nicaragua over the illegal appointment of their honorary consul in occupied Crimea.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expresses its strong protest in connection with the illegal and non-coordinated visit of Ambassador of the Republic of Nicaragua to the Russian Federation, Mrs. Alba Azucena Torres, to the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (Ukraine) for handing over a consular patent to so-called 'Honorary Consul of Nicaragua to the Russian Federation with a residence in Simferopol' Oleg Belaventsev," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
According to the Ukrainian diplomats, the move is a gross violation of Ukrainian legislation and international law, in particular UN General Assembly Resolution 68/262 "Territorial integrity of Ukraine," three resolutions "Human Rights Situation in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine," as well as two resolutions titled "Problem of the militarization of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine, as well as parts of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov."
"The move is considered by our government to be null and void and is viewed as an openly unfriendly step on the part of Nicaragua against Ukraine, which contributes to the Russian aggression and its attempt to annex an integral part of the territory of Ukraine, such as the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol," the MFA said.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has repeatedly warned the Nicaraguan side about the inadmissibility of actions that violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state. The Ukrainian side has begun the process of applying sanctions in accordance with Ukrainian legislation and will continue to take all the necessary actions provided for by the laws of Ukraine and international law to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state," the statement reads.
